In this line of work, it’s often the small, unexpected moments that remind us why we show up day after day. Healing doesn’t always happen in big gestures or major breakthroughs. Sometimes it happens quietly in a shared smile, a moment of connection, or the simple innocence of children finding comfort in one another. These tiny moments reveal so much about child resilience in supervised visitation, and they often say more than any formal progress report ever could.
Today, something truly special happened during a supervised visit I was supporting, the kind of moment that reflects why trauma-informed, child-centered family support matters so deeply.
I was supervising a visit at a local library: a little girl and her mom, whom I’ve been supporting for nearly two years. She’s four years old, full of curiosity and resilience.
Partway through, another family I’ve worked with in the past walked in. The older child, around 8 or 9, recognized me immediately. We exchanged a warm hello.
Then something magical unfolded.
Despite the age gap, the two girls sat on the floor and began to play. No hesitation. No judgment. No talk of trauma or hardship, and they’ve both been through so much.
They played with joy. They played with trust. They played like children should, free from the weight of their stories.
It was a quiet, powerful moment. A reminder of the resilience of children, especially in the supportive environment of supervised visitation. A reminder of the importance of this work. And a reminder that healing often begins in the simplest, most natural interactions.
💛 They teach us so much.
